Distinctions between Coaching and Psychotherapy
Coaching
Psychotherapy
- Forward Facing—coaching focuses on
setting and achieving goals by
leveraging strengths. - Coaches collaborate with individuals
and families to achieve the client’s
personally chosen goals. These may
be individual or family goals. - Coaching Best suited for high functioning individuals and families
seeking self-improvement, academic
development, career advancement, or
personal development. - Coaching Uses motivational
techniques, accountability strategies,
and action plans to help clients reach
goals. Their relationship is a
collaborative partnership focused on
maximizing potential and
accountability. - Coaches are not legally required to
have a license, though many obtain
certifications. - Coaching follows
ethical guidelines, but does not have
the same legal confidentiality as
therapy. - Coaching outcomes help clients
enhance performance, improve habits,
and reach personal/professional
aspirations. - Choose coaching if you want to
improve productivity, career growth,
or personal development, gain
motivation and accountability or
overcome obstacles to success.
- Past Facing—psychotherapy delves
into past experiences and emotional
issues to address underlying mental
health concerns. - Psychotherapists work with
individuals struggling with mental
health issues, emotional distress, or
behavioral challenges. - Psychotherapists use clinical
interventions like cognitive-behavioral
therapy (CBT), psychoanalysis, or
trauma-informed care to address
psychological concerns. - Psychotherapists and clients have a
clinical relationship that may involve
diagnosing and treating mental health
disorders. - Psychotherapists must be licensed
mental health professionals (e.g.,
psychologists, counselors, social
workers, psychiatrists) with formal
training. Therapy is bound by strict
confidentiality laws (e.g., HIPPA) and
professional code of ethics. - Psychotherapy outcomes help heal
emotional pain, improve mental
health, and develop coping
mechanisms. - Choose psychotherapy if you need to
address mental health concerns
(anxiety, depression, trauma, etc.),
work through emotional distress or
past trauma and improve coping skills
and emotional resilience
